Oct. 21, 2014. On Tuesday, Oct. 21, the Blue Ridge Community Theatre will hold auditions for the upcoming production of “The Red Velvet Cake Wars,” to be performed Nov. 20-22.

Auditions will be held tonight from 6-9 p.m. at the Harvest House located at 247 Boone Heights Dr. in Boone.

Openings include parts for eight women between the ages of 40 and 90 and four openings for men between the ages of 50-70.

“This is a production with adults, everyone in the show is aged 40 and over,” Rowell said.

“We took a two-year break to do some reorganization so this is our first show after that break. It is all volunteers, everything on stage and behind the stage is all made by community people. We don’t hire professionals, we do everything ourselves. If people don’t want to be on stage, we are always looking for people to do things behind the scenes, like come out to do hair and makeup, and build props and sets. Anyone who wants to help with the show but might not want to be on stage is welcome too.”

The Blue Ridge Community Theatre started in 1976 and was the first theatre in the High Country.

“It started up with a grant to bring performing arts to the High Country,” said Rowell, who has been with the organization since 1980.

“The Red Velvet Cake Wars” is about a “tacky Texas family having a feud over who will host the family reunion,” said Rowell. “They get in a fight over who will make the famous red velvet cake and they wind up betting the house on who can make the best cake. It is very funny, and written by the same Asheville playwrights who wrote ‘Dearly Departed’ and ‘Dixie Swim Club.'”

Tickets for this event will be for sale starting two weeks before the show.
