July 30, 2014. Two inmates who assaulted an Avery County detective on Tuesday afternoon and fled the state were captured at dawn in Georgia on Wednesday morning, according to the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office.

Calvin Lee Metcalf, 20, of Bakersville, and Phillip Nicholas Metcalf, 25, of Spruce Pine were being held in the McDowell County jail on charges for crimes conducted in Mitchell County. As part of a separate investigation for a break-in in Avery County, deputies from the Avery County Sheriff’s Office transported the two inmates to an area near Mullen Hill Road and Three Mile Highway to conduct the investigation.

It was there that the inmates overpowered and assaulted an Avery County detective at about 4 p.m. on Tuesday, stole his vehicle and weapons and escaped the area. The two inmates, considered “armed and dangerous,” were driving a gray, 2011 four-door Dodge truck with tinted windows, black running boards and a camper cover.

Officers from North Carolina and surrounding states searched for the Metcalfs, who were eventually captured in Georgia in the early hours on Wednesday.

The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office, in a release this morning, noted that the two fugitives are currently being detained in a jail in Gordon County, Ga.
