1) Help the Homeless and Hungry in Our Area

Hearts for Hospitality, an organization that acts as Ambassadors and Supporters of the Hospitality House is hosting a meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at Grace Lutheran Church in Boone. Area women are invited to attend. Discussion will center around a fundraiser billed as “30 Years of Hope” planned at the Blue Ridge Mountain Club. The fundraising event is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 22 at 11 a.m. Hospitality House is located in Boone. The organization provides shelter, food and other services to the homeless and hungry in the counties of Allegnany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes and Yancey. 2) Cooking Demonstration Held at Ashe County Farmers Market Aug. 2

Please join us at the Ashe County Farmers’ Market on Saturday, Aug. 2 for a cooking demonstration by Chef Ric Cain, Boondocks Brewing Tap Room & Restaurant. Ric will be grilling several different types of vegetables from our vendors grown right here in Ashe County. Of course there will be samples for all to taste. Grilling will begin at 10 a.m. and last until noon and Ric always has new recipes for grillig anything on the grill. Don’t forget to shop at all of the vendors for all types of produce, baked goods, crafts, jewelry, soaps, fresh flowers, meats, eggs, honey, jellies and jams and more. The market is open from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. every Saturday through the end of October and every Wednesday through September.

3) Concert at St. John’s Held Aug. 3

On Sunday, Aug. 3, at 5 p.m., Ken Kolodner, nationally recognized as one of the country’s best hammer dulcimer artists and old time fiddler along with his son Brad will bring an evening of traditional Appalachian folk music. Brad, who is an expert of the claw hammer banjo, has wom many awards for his playing as well as composing much of their music including the title song on their CD “Otter Creek.” This CD topped the folk charts at No. 1 as has several of their other songs. They have played at many prestigious venues throughout the country including the Kennedy Center, Helcion’s Winter Solstice and many more. Along with performing. Ken and Brad teach and are active in many old time music venues from their home town of Baltimore. Bring along a picnic to share after the concert and get to meet with these fine musicians. 4) Quilt Guild Meeting Aug. 7

The Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, Aug. 7 at 1:30 p.m. We meet in the conference room on the second floor of the senior center on Poplar Grove Connector in Boone. We will have a surprise guest who will auction quilt items to raise money to purchase fabric for our donation quilts. Clean out your quilt room: bring your old patterns, buttons, hard cover quilt books you no longer use, fabrics you don’t need, rulers and any quilt items you wish to donate. We have a local, talented auctioneer so join the man with the gavel and have some fun. If you don’t have anything to bring, come anyway and help a worthy cause.
