Mildred Kate Burkett (May 6, 1919 – June 24, 2014)

Ms. Mildred Kate Burkett, age 95, of 472 Mabel School Road, Zionville, passed away Tuesday morning, June 24, 2014, at Watauga Medical Center.

Ms. Burkett was born May 6, 1919 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late James McKinley Burkett and Mollie Warren Burkett. She was a retired employee of IRC, Inc. in Boone, and a member of Mabel Baptist Church.

Mrs. Burkett is survived by two daughters, Nancy Anderson Zawodniak of Toms River, New Jersey, and Karen Anderson McMillan and fiancé Cecil Griffin of Trade, Tennessee; three granddaughters, Sandy Wilke and husband Joseph of Toms River, Jessica Presnell Mayo and husband Tom of Boone, and Jennifer Presnell of Charlotte; two grandsons, Johnny Dutch and Bobby Dutch, both of Cranford, New Jersey; four great-granddaughters, Renee’ Gregory and husband Bob, and Ashley Couto, all of Toms River, Whitney Mayo and Kaitlin Mayo, both of Raleigh; one great great-granddaughter, Rachel Gregory of Toms River; two great great-grandsons, Bobby and Connor Gregory of Toms River; two sisters, Margaret Oliver and Charlotte Walls and husband George, all of Zionville; one sister-in-law, Dora Burkett of Zionville; one son-in-law, Ronald Presnell, and two special caregivers, Stephanie Sluder and Judy Dollar. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Anderson; one daughter, Jamie “Kathy” Anderson Presnell; one son-in-law, Marius Zawodniak; two brothers, J.M. Burkett and Lewis Burkett; one brother-in-law, L.C. Oliver, and one nephew, Keith Oliver.

Funeral services for Ms. Kate Burkett will be conducted Thursday afternoon, June 26, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Mabel Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Frank Johnson and Reverend Derick Wilson. Burial will follow in the Burkett-Lewis Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Jimmy Trivette, age 66, of 6324 Old Highway 421 South, Deep Gap, passed away Tuesday morning, June 24, 2014, at his home.

Jimmy was born September 11, 1947 in Watauga County, a son of the late Stanley James Trivette and Elma Rebecca Day Trivette. He was a retired supervisor for IRC/TRW and was a clerk at the Appalachian State University Post Office. Jimmy was a member of Laurel Springs Baptist Church and served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.

Jimmy is survived by his wife, Mary Cornett Trivette of the home; one aunt, Jackie Allen of Mountain City; one sister-in-law, Virginia Trivette of Drexel; six brothers-in-law, Dallas Cornett and wife Mamie of Hudson, Joe Cornett and wife Kerwin of Mountain City, Jerry Cornett and Randy Cornett, both of Trade, Tennessee, Mike Cornett and wife Kitty of Mountain City, and Lloyd Cornett and wife Wanda of Granite Falls, and special friends Keith and Carolyn Hincher of Wilkesboro, Lance, Sarah, and Jessie Critcher, all of Boone, Caroleen Watson and Mike and Mary Alice Coffey, all of Deep Gap.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Sam Cornett, and several aunts.

Funeral services for Jimmy Trivette will be conducted Saturday afternoon, June 28, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Laurel Springs Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Brent Bolick, Reverend Sherrill Wellborn, and Pastor Tim Lynch. Military graveside rites and burial, provided by American Legion Post 130 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow in Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Teddy Cline “T.C.” Farthing, age 99, of Goshen Creek Lane, Boone, passed away Sunday morning, June 22, 2014, at Watauga Medical Center.

Mr. Farthing was born February 12, 1915 in Watauga County, a son of the late Carter Joseph Farthing, Sr. and Maude Lee Farthing. He was a retired mechanical engineer for Western Electric and a beach property developer in Oak Island, North Carolina. Mr. Farthing attended Lees-McRae College and graduated from Appalachian State University in 1937. He was inducted into the Appalachian State University Athletic Hall of Fame for football and wrestling. Mr. Farthing was a classically trained tenor, performing with his band in many areas of North Carolina and Florida.

Mr. Farthing is survived by his wife, Mary Hoffman Farthing of the home; two daughters, Abbey Jo Courtney of Kelso, Washington, and Victoria Farthing Leonard and husband Gary of Stafford, Virginia; two grandsons, Ted Leonard of Woodbridge, Virginia, and Jim Leonard of Stafford, Virginia; two sisters, Betty Jean Hughes of Weaverville, North Carolina, and Carrie Lee Greer of Tucson, Arizona; one brother, Winfield H. Farthing of Ashton, Maryland; one sister-in-law, Betty Farthing of Zionville, and one brother-in-law, William Hoffman of Boone.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Penelope Lynn Farthing; one sister, Dorothy Greene, and two brothers, C.J. Farthing, Jr. and Hal Farthing.

Memorial services for Teddy Cline “T.C.” Farthing will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, June 24, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Reverend Doug Sterrett.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

Rev. Gene Lawrence Smith, age 92, of Dusty Road, Boone, passed away Saturday morning, June 21st, 2014 at his home. Gene was born June 4, 1922 in the Valle Crucis community of Watauga County. Rev. Smith was of the Baptist faith and for more than 25 years, actively pastored churches in Watauga, Caldwell and Avery County’s. After serving three years in the US Army during WWII, Gene owned and operated Gene & Michael Smith Produce Company before leasing to various trucking companies.

Gene is survived by his wife of 72 years, Juanita Matheson Smith; son, Mick Smith and daughter-in-law, Laura Smith, of Midway Park; grandsons, Michael Smith and wife Denise, Matthew Smith and wife, Jerica, and Morgan Smith, all of Sugar Grove, Andrew Smith and wife Katy, of Greensboro, Orin Smith of Orlando, Florida, and Mason Russell and Ray Smith, both of Midway Park; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Luke, Mattie, Carson and Landon Smith, all of Sugar Grove; brother, Glenn Hicks and wife, Judy, of Hudson, sister, Mary Wallace of Sugar Grove, sister-in-law, Ruth Hicks, of Boone; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Smith and Jennie Baird; and brothers, Mack, Frank, and Fred ‘Shorty’ Smith.

Funeral services for Rev. Gene Lawrence Smith will be conducted Monday morning, June 23, 2014, at 11 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Melvin Hodges and Rev. Vance Triplett. Burial with Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post 130 will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:30 until 8 o’clock at Austin & Barnes.

Mrs. Patsy V. Martin (October 04, 1942 – June 20, 2014)

Mrs. Patsy Dale Vannoy Martin, age 71, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Friday morning, June 20, 2014 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Born October 4, 1942 in Watauga County, she was the daughter of the late Rusher Dale and Betty Hayes Vannoy. Patsy was a retired inspector for the USDA.

She is survived by her husband, Billy Martin, one son, Craig Hollar, Jr., and wife Jennifer of Wilkesboro, one step daughter, Wendy Gambill and husband David of North Wilkesboro, ten grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rusher Dale and Betty Hayes Vannoy.

Funeral services for Mrs. Patsy Martin will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Austin and Barnes Funeral Home. Officiating will be Dr. Donnie Shumate. Entombment will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 o’clock until 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Jeffrey Boyd Parlier, 42, of Dogwood Road, Boone, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at his home following an extended battle with colon cancer. Until he became ill, Jeff worked as general manager of Spruce Pine Chevrolet. He loved to spend time with his family, fish, grill outside year-round and travel, especially to the coast. Jeff made friends easily and had many in a small community by Watauga Lake. He will be missed.

Born January 6, 1972, in Watauga County, he was a son of Boyd and Helen Parlier of Vilas. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Tina Robbins Parlier, and their sons, Dustin Christopher and Devan Conner Parlier; one sister, Denise Greene and husband, Paul, of Zionville, and one brother, Joe McMillan of Boone; his father and mother-in-law, Robert and Shirley Ellison of Boone; sister-in-law, Susan Busic, of Vilas: and one brother-in-law, Victor Ellison of Boone.

Jeff was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Boyd, Sr. and Helen Parlier; his maternal grandparents, Leonard and Minnie Presnell; nephew, Joseph Greer; and brother-in-law, Kenneth.

A celebration of Jeff’s life will be held Friday evening, June 20, at 6:30 at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Jeff Wilson and Rev. Tim Bunton The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5 until 6:30, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes.

Gregory David Tague, age 68, of Raven Rock Drive, Boone, passed away Monday evening, June 16, 2014, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Mr. Tague was born January 20, 1946 in Harrison County, Pennsylvania, a son of Margaret Gregory Tague of Hixson, Tennessee and the late James William Tague. He was a retired financial officer for Lockheed-Martin Corporation. Mr. Tague served in the United States Army, where he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and Army Commendation Medal.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Tague is survived by his wife, Gloria Edge Tague of the home; two daughters, Laura Creel and husband Damon of Seville, Florida and Ashlee McDowell of Asheville; one son, David Tague of Seville, Florida; three grandsons, Dalton Creel, Joshua Creel, and Travis Creel, all of Seville, Florida; one brother, James Tague and wife Priscilla of Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, and one aunt, Barbara Kumar of California.

A Funeral Mass for Gregory David Tague will be conducted Thursday morning, June 19, 2014, at 11:00 o’clock, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Father Dave Brzoska. Military graveside rites and entombment will be conducted Friday afternoon, at 3:00 o’clock, at Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

A reception will follow the Funeral Mass.
