The SugarBrew Summer Festival Brings Beer, Wine and Spirits Tasting and More to Sugar Mountain Resort

July 31, 2013. It’s that time of year again. Time to get ready for beer tastings, wine samples, live entertainment, spirits tastings, delicious food and much more. That’s right. It’s time for SugarBrew! The much-anticipated festival, held more than 5,000 feet up at Sugar Mountain Resort on Saturday, Aug. 6, is something that many across the High Country, and more still from off the mountain, look forward to each year. Running from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., guests will be able to sample beers, wines, and this year even spirits while enjoying the breathtaking views of Sugar Mountain.

This beautiful experience under the stars featured the Symphony of the Mountains playing an outdoor concert by the shore of Chetola Lake, capped off by a spectacular fireworks display to finish off the evening. Tater Hill Open in Full Swing Through Saturday, Look To The High Country Sky For A Glimpse Of The Gliders

July 31, 2013. From downtown Boone, folks could look up in the air and see paragliders and hang gliders flying over top Howard’s Knob on their way to the Boone Airport as the eighth annual Tater Hill Open is in full swing. “We go where the winds tell us to go,” said Bubba Goodman, who owns the Tater Hill property where the liftoff takes place that has an elevation above 5,000 feet.

School starts on Aug. 19, and for families and realtors wanting to know times and routes of school buses in Watauga County for a particular address may peruse the EDULOG WebQuery system to obtain the school name, bus number, bus schedule and the nearest bus stop for a particular address. The system went online in February during the 2012-13 school year.

July 29, 2013. Letters to the Editor. BY CRAIG DUDLEY / Dear Editor, “To learn who rules you simply find out who you aren’t allowed to criticize”. Voltaire. You might say you’re offended. Being offended is something that happens in your head which others haven’t control over. You choose to be offended. You can do things to injure, but not to offend others. You can’t make another accept your ideas anymore than they should be prevented from offering them. That’s the core of censorship. There’s no reason that ideas must be politically correct. Perhaps we should be schooled on how to be monotonous so none are “offended”.

June Unemployment Figures In High Country: Watauga – 8.2 Percent, Avery – 10.1 Percent, Ashe – 11.4 Percent

July 30, 2013. June unemployment figures for the High Country – Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties – came in mixed compared to May. Watauga County’s June unemployment rate was 8.2 percent, rising .1 percent from May and decreasing .5 percent over the last 12 months. Avery County’s June unemployment rate was 10.1 percent, decreasing .2 percent from May and decreasing 1 percent over the last 12 months. Ashe County’s June unemployment rate was 11.4 percent, increasing .4 percent from May and increasing .3 percent over the last 12 months. Unemployment rates (not seasonally adjusted) increased in 81 of North Carolina’s counties in June, decreased in 14 and remained the same in five. All 14 of the State’s metro areas experienced rate increases. Scotland County had the highest unemployment rate at 16.2 percent while Currituck County had the lowest at 5.8 percent. Among the Metro areas, Rocky Mount at 13.3 percent experienced the highest rate and Asheville at 7.1 percent had the lowest. The June not seasonally adjusted statewide rate was 9.3 percent. When compared to the same month last year, not seasonally adjusted unemployment rates increased in 12 counties, fell in 85 and remained unchanged in three. One metro area experienced …

‘Moral Monday’ Moves To Watauga County, WNC

July 30, 2013. With the ending of the legislative session in Raleigh, “Moral Mondays” have moved into Watauga County and other parts of Western North Carolina. Protesters stood on the steps of the Jones House Community and Cultural Center in downtown Boone yesterday. It was the second “Moral Monday” protest to occur in Boone in as many weeks. Retired local activist Marjorie McKinney, 71, said the local movement started because several people wanted to go to Raleigh and show support but couldn’t make the trek to the State Capitol.
