North Carolina Theater Conference Comes to WHS

Oct. 31, 2012. Watauga High School will welcome more than 250 high school actors from 11 different schools at the annual North Carolina Theatre Conference Regional High School Play Festival this Friday and Saturday Nov. 2 and 3. The high school’s honors acting class, the Pioneer Playmakers, along with more than 80 volunteers, will help run 14 one-act plays over the course of the two days. The festival is free.

Latest on Sandy from American Red Cross

Oct. 31, 2012. The American Red Cross has a huge relief response underway for Sandy, providing people across a number of states with a safe place to stay, food to eat and comfort during this difficult time. So far, the Heart of Carolina Region has deployed 18 volunteers to Eastern North Carolina, New York, New Jersey and Virginia. The majority of them will help in our mass care function, which supports the sheltering and feeding of those affected by the storm.

Regional Artist Project Grant Winners Announced

Oct. 31, 2012. The Arts Councils of Watauga, Ashe, Wilkes and Alleghany counties have recently announced the names of the artists who have been selected to receive this year’s Regional Artist Project Grants. This program has supported the work of more than 140 artists from the region with grants totaling over $88,000 during that time.

Needlework Class at Lois E. Harrill Starts Nov. 15

Oct. 31, 2012. Lois E. Harrill Senior Center is now accepting registration for a new session of needlework class. Classes will meet at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center each Thursday from 1-4 p.m., beginning Thursday, Nov. 15. The instructor is Marianne Evans and the charge for the 12-week session is $36.

WAC Christmas Card Design Competition Winner Announced; Steven Newhouse’s ASU Snowman Wins

Oct. 31, 2012. The Watauga County Arts Council has started a new tradition. This year they held their first annual Christmas Card Design Competition, an opportunity for local artists to showcase their creativity by designing a unique holiday card. Artists submitted their designs and the final design was chosen through a “people’s choice” selection process. The packages of cards with the winning design will be available for purchase for the first time on Nov. 2.

Oct. 31, 2012. Now includes photo gallery! Sugar Mountain Ski Resort opened today Wednesday, October 31 — Halloween — for day skiing and snowboarding. In its 43-year history, Sugar Mountain Resort’s earliest opening was on Nov. 5 in 1976. Early risers Jamie Borden, Rosie Hewitt and Ashlet Cutrell, members of the Appalachian State University Alpine Ski Club, were at the mountain at 8 a.m. to be a part of history with the early opening.

She is survived by her two daughters, Marguerite “Peggy” Lou Chamberlain Hoefl and Susan Marie Chamberlain Shipe, their spouses, Bob and Lowell (NC), seven grandchildren: Paula (& Bobby) Huscroft (Texas), Debra Hoefl (Florida), Chrissie (& Rodney) Lee (Charlotte), Bobby (& Teresa) Hoefl (Charlotte), Marni (& Tom) Nicholas (Statesville), Mark (& Maria) Leach (Florida) and Michael Leach (Florida). Ten great grandchildren: Krista Thies, Ashley Stanger, Cara Hoefl, Alexis Lee, Hannah Leach, Talor Lee, Christopher Valle, Joey Hoefl, Simon Nicholas, and Lea Hoefl; and, three great-great grandchildren: Malaya, Kaileen and Keeara Leaper; three sisters Mary (NJ), Marge (Ohio), Celia (Idaho). Hartley, age 79, of Blowing Rock, passed peacefully into her Savior’s arms on Monday night, surrounded by her beloved family. Born July 19, 1933, in the Blackberry region of Caldwell County, she was the daughter of Edmund and Zora Ford Hamlet, and was the youngest of nine siblings. She is survived by her son Mike and wife Micki of Blowing Rock and two granddaughters, Cassandra and Kathryn; her sisters Eula Young of Bishopville, SC and Kathy Steele of Gainesville, FL; brother-in-law Jim West of Newnan GA; sister-in-law Virginia Hartley of Boone; special friends Johnny Tester of Phoenix AZ, Duane & Janelle Addison of Boone, Aubrey & Elizabeth Riley of Boone; many nieces and nephews, and her loving church family. She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin Hartley; her parents; brothers Gordie Hamlet and John Hamlet; and sisters Blanche Chandler, Mary Hamlet, Faye McCormick, and Lea Coffey.
